Shift Management Software

This project involved redesigning a shift management platform used by hospitals and senior living centers. The platform enables registered nurses to freely manage their availability and provides hospitals with the flexibility to fill different shifts as needed. By creating and managing shift availability, hospitals can ensure they have the necessary staff whenever required, while nurses can easily find and sign up for shifts that fit their schedules.

Problem

Hospitals and senior living centers struggled to efficiently manage shift availability, leading to staffing gaps and increased reliance on internal support to resolve issues.

Solution

A redesigned shift management platform that streamlined the process for hospitals to create and track shifts, while allowing nurses to easily manage their availability and sign up for shifts. This led to a significant increase in the number of shifts filled, which in turn had a positive impact on the platform's revenue by ensuring more consistent staffing and reducing the need for internal support.

Role

  • Product Understanding: Conducted an in-depth analysis of the existing products to understand the full process, including the business model and revenue streams.

  • Redesign & Iteration: Led the redesign of the shift management interface, focusing on making it more intuitive for hospitals to create shifts and track their status, and easier for nurses to manage their availability and pick up shifts.

  • Developer Coordination: Collaborated closely with developers to ensure that the design changes were effectively implemented, balancing user needs with technical constraints.

Challenges

  • Simplifying the shift creation and management process for hospitals, ensuring it could accommodate varying staffing needs.

  • Enhancing the user experience for nurses, enabling them to manage their availability and sign up for shifts with minimal friction.

Approach

  • Engaged in user research to uncover pain points in the existing system, particularly focusing on the needs of both hospital staff and nurses.

  • Developed and iterated on wireframes and prototypes, incorporating feedback from stakeholders to refine the design.

  • Ensured alignment between the design objectives and business goals, maintaining a focus on improving usability and efficiency.

Outcomes

  • Increased Efficiency: The redesigned platform significantly improved the ease with which hospitals could create and manage shifts, leading to a noticeable increase in shift creation.

  • Enhanced User Experience: Nurses found it simpler to manage their availability and sign up for shifts, which contributed to a smoother staffing process. The need for internal support to assist hospitals with shift creation was greatly reduced.

Learnings

This project highlighted the importance of designing with both end-user and business needs in mind. By understanding the workflow from both the hospital and nurse perspectives, the redesign successfully improved the user experience on both sides. Collaboration with developers was key to ensuring the design was both practical and effective.
